Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) conducted interviews back in 2021 for a Medical Director to oversee our EMS & Special Operations Programs utilizing members of our EMS steering committee, the District Chief of Training & the EMS Training Captain. We interviewed one candidate from UF Health, who previously provided medical direction service for GFR, 2 former Associate Medical Director’s, as well as the Medical Director of Santa Fe College’s Paramedic program. Dr. Abo is a board certified physician who did his fellowship in EMS through the University of Florida’s EMS fellowship program. He was formerly an Assoc. Medical Director with GFR & has extensive knowledge & familiarity of GFR Special Operations to include Community Resource Paramedicine, Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, & SWAT Medicine. Additionally he has extensive experience working with multiple fire departments in the state of FL, including the venom response team for Miami Dade Fire Rescue. The result of the interview process, as well as, multiple meetings with UF Health, was the selection of one of our previous Assoc. Medical Directors Dr. Ben Abo. Dr. Abo not only outperformed in the interview but was selected due to his extensive experience w-GFR and expertise in all aspects of the Fire / EMS service. We have utilized Abo Emergency Consulting LLC as our Medical Director since 2021 October 1.
